Student Work Policy

During rotations the student will work on patient samples provided by the instructors. The student's work schedule is routinely from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. This schedule may be altered in order to accommodate the rotation.

The student may be expected to perform services during rotations after demonstrating proficiency, but students may not be substituted for regular personnel. The student will always have direct supervision during each rotation.Students may be employed outside regular educational hours, provided the work does not interfere with regular academic responsibilities. Work is not compulsory as part of the SBB program.

University Health System

Students can be part time employees of University Health System, if positions are available. Therefore, the student would be subject to all rules and regulations of the system. As a part time employee the student can receive health insurance and vacation benefits. All new employees are considered to be on a probationary status for the first 90 calendar days of employment. As an employee, the work schedule will be completely separate from the student schedule. An employee will be expected to clock-in and out as scheduled. Any student can apply for an open position by completing an employee application from the University Health System, Personnel Department. It is the responsibility of the student to monitor posted openings and initiate the application process, if they so desire.

South Texas Blood & Tissue Center:

Students also may apply for part time positions at the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC), when positions are available. The student would be subject to all rules and regulations of the STBTC. As a part time employee the student can receive health insurance and vacation benefits. All new employees are considered to be on a probationary status for the first 90 calendar days of employment. As an employee, the work schedule will be completely separate from the student schedule. An employee will be expected to clock-in and out as scheduled.
