CRITERIA FOR PROGRESSION IN AND COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM
Attendance:
The program at present is accredited for two students. Student time is divided
into lectures and department rotations. Students must attend all scheduled
lectures and at least 90% of the scheduled time in each department rotation.
Students missing more than 10% of a rotation must make up the time. Students
will be given 10 days off during the school year for vacation and sick time.
Students with extended sick leave will be required to make up the time unless
waived by the Medical Director and Education Coordinator.
Students who do not conduct themselves in a professional manner will be counseled
and this may be cause for termination from the program.
Lecture Examinations:
Examinations are given after each section of lectures (see SBB Examinations outline). A student must maintain an 80% or greater on each exam.
An answer will be regarded as correct if the student can provide a legitimate current reference supporting the answer given to the question.
Any student failing to attain a score of 75% will be required to provide a comprehensive correct answer with references for each question missed.
A student scoring less than 80% will be required to retake another exam on the same subject within a designated period of time. Repeat failures
on the exams will represent a failing grade. Should the student receive failing grades in two series of exams:
- The student will be counseled by the Education
Coordinator and Program and/or Medical Director
- A decision will be made whether to allow the student to
continue in the program or, if a learning impairment is suspected the student
will be referred to Student Services at UTHSC for evaluation of study skills,
testing skills, personal problems, etc.
Student Rotations:
The student will be required to complete a rotation checklist during the rotation
period. The checklist will be maintained by the student. The rotation instructor
will be required to sign off on the checklist to indicate that the student
accomplished all of the goals stated.
If the checklist is not completed by the end of the rotation the student will be
required to complete the requirements on their own time as long as there is
adequate supervision.
In most rotations the student will be given study questions to be answered by the
student during that rotation. Time will be given to review the study questions.
At the completion of some rotations the student will be given an exam on
specifics learned during that rotation. The exam may or may not be a "take home"
exam. Students must maintain an 80% average on rotation exams. An answer will be
regarded as correct if the student can provide a legitimate current reference
supporting the answer given to the question. A student scoring less than 80% may
be required to repeat certain aspects of the rotation and retake another exam.
Student Project:
The student will be required to complete a student project. The project should
demonstrate the student's ability to collect, analyze, and report pertinent
material on a clinical or research problem.
At the end of the program students will have completed their chosen project and
report. The faculty advisor for evaluation will review the report. The student
will give an oral presentation of their project to the Program faculty.
Comprehensive Final Exam:
A comprehensive final exam will be given to the student during the final week of
the program. The student must have an 80% on the final exam for completion of
the program. The final exam will not be given until all aspects of the program
mentioned above are satisfactorily completed.
Other Educational Activities:
- A presentation to the students of Medical Technology/ Clinical Laboratory Science.
- A presentation to the employees of University Hospital or South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.
The students will also present articles for discussion at the monthly Blood Bank Journal Club. Students will critically review the methods and conclusions of the authors.
Students will attend at no charge appropriate teleconferences.
